What is this programme about?

Operated by the non-profit Institute for Shipboard Education (ISE) and with the Colorado State University as the academic partner. Semester at Sea's worldwide itineraries offer rigorous coursework coupled with field assignments and service learning in over 10 international destinations, and the skills necessary to compete in today's rapidly globalising world.

When does the programme take place?

NUS students from all faculties have the option of participating in the voyages below:


  • Fall (14 -15 weeks) - September to December
  • Spring (14 -15 weeks) - January to mid - April

Students need to apply for online Leave of Absence for the semester voyage. Students also need to pay NUS tuition fees if they would like to transfer credits earned during the Leave of Absence semester. Students may appeal for a NUS tuition fee waiver, after completion of the Semester at Sea programme, through the faculty but there is no guarantee that they will get the waiver. This also does not imply that your appeal for waiver will be rejected.

What is the academic content?

Semester voyages feature up to 75 courses. Participants will study full-time during the voyage, and must take the core course “Global Studies”.


What are the types of student accommodation available?

Accommodation on board varies: from inside double/outside triple to outside double.

How much does it cost?

The programme fee includes tuition (up to 15 semester credits), housing (price varies by cabin category), all meals aboard the ship, all academically required field labs, full-time and on-site residential student services staff, and advisement and assistance by ISE Student Services.

Is financial assistance available?

NUS students who meet the programme’s eligibility criteria and complete their application by the dates below are eligible for the ISE-NUS scholarship in the form of tuition reduction (up to 60% of the programme fee).

How many placements are available?

There is no pre-determined limit on the number of placements available to NUS students.

What are the eligibility requirements?

  • Undergraduates from any faculty who have completed at least one year of study at NUS prior to participation in this programme
  • Should not be in their graduating semester prior to participation in this programme
  • CAP of 3.5 and above
  • Students must demonstrate their writing skills in a 300-500 word essay as indicated in the online application

What are the required travel documents?

Please note that you need:


  • A valid passport: Valid for six months past the completion date of your voyage with eight fully blank visa pages
  • Visas: Please determine the visa requirements directly with the embassies or consular agencies of the countries
  • Yellow fever vaccination

Students are responsible for ensuring that they have proper entry documents for all countries they plan to visit as part of this programme.


How do I apply?

To be considered for the ISE-NUS scholarships (in the form of tuition fee reduction), applications for all voyages must be submitted to ISE by the dates mentioned below. Applications received after these dates will not be considered for the ISE-NUS scholarship.

  • Work with your faculty on your study plan
  • Students need to apply for online Leave of Absence for the semester voyage. Students also need to pay NUS tuition fees if they would like to transfer credits earned during the Leave of Absence semester. Students may appeal for a NUS tuition fee waiver, after completion of the Semester at Sea programme, through the faculty but there is no guarantee that they will get the waiver. This also does not imply that your appeal for waiver will be rejected.
  • Request for a waiver of the US$ 50 application fee via email at [email protected] BEFORE submitting the online application at SAS’s website
  • Upon approval of the application fee waiver, complete the online application at SAS’s website here
  • Inform GRO at [email protected] and provide the application number and NUS matriculation number
  • An SAS representative will contact you to follow up on your application
